“Is it true McNuggets contain TBHQ, an antioxidant derived from petroleum that is either sprayed directly on the nugget or inside the box?”
Hello Shannon. We do not spray THBQ on our McNuggets or on the box we
serve them in. THBQ is listed as an ingredient in our Chicken McNuggets
because it is present in minute quantities in the oil that they are
cooked in. It is used as a preservative for unsaturated vegetable oils
and many edible animal fats. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA),
the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada
have all evaluated THBQ and determined that it is safe to consume at the
concentration allowed in foods. Since some of the oil is absorbed
during the frying process, technically our Chicken McNuggets contain a
small amount of this preservative.
